Privacy coins outperformed Bitcoin in 2026 amid increased surveillance

Приватные монеты обогнали биткоин в 2026 году News

Intensifying government surveillance and tighter cryptocurrency regulation worldwide have triggered a surge of interest in privacy coins — and in the first half of 2026, they confidently outperformed bitcoin.

Zcash, Monero, and Zano vs. Bitcoin

The segment leader was Zcash (ZEC): in the first six months of 2026, the coin gained about 23.33%, while bitcoin fell by roughly 23.89% over the same period.

Other privacy-focused assets also performed noticeably better than the broader market. Monero (XMR) and Zano declined by just 16.01% and 22.08%, respectively — meaning they held up better than bitcoin, which lost nearly 24%.

The trend fits into the broader picture: amid the “crypto winter” and sideways market movement, privacy coins have traditionally shown resilience because their drivers are socio-political rather than purely market-based.

Why Interest in Privacy Coins Is Growing

The main reason is tighter oversight of cryptocurrency transactions. The more restrictions regulators impose, the higher the demand for assets that protect transaction privacy.

An additional factor is stablecoin regulation. After the European MiCA rules came into force, major exchanges including Binance, Coinbase, and Kraken began restricting access to USDT for EU users. This is pushing part of the audience to look for alternatives that preserve confidentiality.

At the same time, experts note that the one thing the sector truly lacks is a fully fledged privacy stablecoin. The emergence of such an instrument could become a new catalyst for the entire segment.

Rising Number of Wallet Hacks

Another factor fueling interest in privacy is the rise in cyber threats. According to a Chainalysis report, the number of crypto wallet hacks tripled to 158,000 incidents, while the number of unique victims doubled to 80,000.

At the same time, the total amount of stolen funds fell to $713 million. This points to a shift in attackers’ tactics: they are now targeting more users but stealing less from each victim.

What This Means for the Market

The privacy coin sector remains one of the most discussed and at the same time one of the most controversial in 2026. On the one hand, there is growing demand for financial privacy and support from institutional players. On the other, there is constant regulatory pressure and delistings from major exchanges.

Analysts agree on one thing: privacy coins are a highly volatile and high-risk segment that moves according to its own rules, with weak correlation to bitcoin and Ethereum. Their performance depends primarily on the regulatory backdrop and public demand for privacy.

Whether the current rise will prove to be a sustainable trend or just another short-term spike will become clear in the second half of the year. You can follow developments in the sector and other cryptocurrencies in our news section.
