In short
- From the EU to Ukraine, the cheapest option is usually fintech services with transfers to a Ukrainian card: for example, ZEN.com to PrivatBank cards (on some plans with no fee) or Wise — it supports transfers to Ukrainian cards. SWIFT to an account at a Ukrainian bank is reliable for large amounts, but more expensive.
- From Ukraine to the EU, NBU limits apply. From August 11, 2026, payments abroad from hryvnia accounts, including transfers to your own foreign card, are limited to UAH 200,000 per month, while transfers abroad from foreign currency accounts for goods and services are limited to another UAH 200,000.
- The real cost of a transfer is not just the fee, but also the exchange rate. Compare how many hryvnias were sent and how many euros were received.
- Ukraine plans to submit its application to join SEPA by the end of 2026. After joining, euro transfers could become several times cheaper — this has already happened in neighboring countries.
- Cryptocurrency works as an alternative route, but banks consider such transactions risky.
Helping parents, paying for a child’s education in Poland, rent in Germany, a fee from Europe — transfers between Ukraine and the EU have become an everyday routine for millions of families. You can send money from the EU to Ukraine and back in a dozen different ways, and the difference in the final amount can reach several percent. Below, we look at which options work in 2026 and how to choose the most cost-effective one.

From the EU to Ukraine

|---|---|---|---|
| ZEN.com → PrivatBank card | Minutes | On some plans, no fee; service exchange rate applies | Terms for residents of Ukraine have changed, check the plan |
| Wise → Ukrainian card | Minutes — hours | Wise fee and its exchange rate | You can receive money in Ukraine, but you cannot send from Ukraine |
| Revolut (for EU residents) → Ukrainian card | Minutes | Fee and exchange rate according to the plan | Only for clients with EU tax residency |
| SWIFT to an account in a Ukrainian bank | 1–3 business days | Fee charged by the sending bank, intermediary banks, and sometimes the receiving bank | Convenient for large amounts with supporting documents |
| Cryptocurrency (USDT) | Minutes | Spread on purchase and sale, network fee | Risk of card blocking when selling via P2P |
If you do not have access to Revolut, a comparison of other services is available in the article Revolut alternatives.
From Ukraine to the EU
Transfers from Ukraine are limited by the NBU’s currency regulations. As of August 11, 2026, under NBU Resolution No. 90:
| Transaction | Limit |
|---|---|
| Payment for goods and services abroad from hryvnia accounts, including by card and SWIFT transfer, as well as transfers to your own foreign card | UAH 200,000 per month |
| Transfers from foreign currency accounts abroad for goods, works, and services | UAH 200,000 per month |
| Purchase of non-cash foreign currency | UAH 200,000 per month |
| Cash withdrawals from foreign currency accounts in Ukraine and abroad | UAH 200,000 per day |
Now, within the limit, you can also pay for housing rent abroad. For large amounts — for example, from the sale of an apartment — separate rules apply: read the guide how to legally transfer a large amount out of Ukraine.
Wise is not suitable for sending money from Ukraine: residents of Ukraine can only receive transfers. A transfer from a Ukrainian bank card to another person’s card in the EU is also limited by currency regulations — check with your bank to see which options it supports.
How to calculate the real cost of a transfer: step by step
- Lock in how much you are sending in your own currency. For example, 500 EUR from an account in Poland.
- Find out how much the recipient will receive. Services show the final amount in hryvnia before you confirm the transfer.
- Calculate the effective exchange rate. Divide the amount received in hryvnia by the amount sent in euros.
- Compare it with the market rate. The difference between the effective rate and the market rate is the real cost of the transfer, even if the service says “no fee.”
- Add hidden fees. For SWIFT, these include intermediary bank fees and the recipient bank’s fee. For crypto, they include the network fee and the P2P spread.
- Check different amounts. A fixed fee hits small transfers harder, while a percentage-based fee affects large ones more. Calculate it, for example, for 500 and 2,000 EUR.
- Make a test transfer. A small amount will show the actual timing and final amount.
Cryptocurrency as a workaround
The scheme is simple: buy USDT in one country, transfer it, and sell it in another. It’s fast, but:
- banks consider incoming P2P transfers risky and are scrutinizing transactions involving other people’s money more strictly;
- in Ukraine, limits apply to transfers between individuals: UAH 50,000 or 100,000 per month without verified income — more details in the guide how to increase the transfer limit;
- in the EU, it is safer to sell cryptocurrency on an exchange with a MiCA license and withdraw via SEPA — instructions are available in the guide how to withdraw crypto in euros.
For regular support to your family, legal fintech channels are more reliable. Cryptocurrency is appropriate when other options are unavailable, provided that you can confirm the source of the funds.
SEPA for Ukraine: what will change
Ukraine is preparing to join the Single Euro Payments Area (SEPA). According to NBU Governor Andriy Pyshnyy, the application must be submitted by the end of 2026 under a simplified procedure, and for this the Verkhovna Rada must adopt draft law No. 14327-d, Mind reports.
What this could bring: in neighboring countries, transfer costs dropped sharply after joining SEPA. In Montenegro, the fee for a transfer of up to 200 euros fell from 74 euros to zero, while in Moldova, the base transfer cost dropped from 20 to 1.26 euros. The Ministry of Finance estimates Ukraine’s annual savings on international transfers at 70–100 million euros, Dengi.ua writes. There is no exact launch date yet.

Risks
- The terms of fintech services change. Fees and availability for Ukrainians are revised without notice — check them before making a transfer.
- NBU limits also change. The NBU is gradually easing currency restrictions, but it may tighten them as well. Check the limits with your bank.
- Financial monitoring. Large and frequent transfers raise questions from banks on both sides. Keep documents confirming the source of funds.
- Fraud. Unofficial “transfers at a better exchange rate” on Telegram are a common scam.
FAQ
What is the cheapest way to transfer money from the EU to Ukraine?
Usually, the cheapest option is fintech services with transfers to a Ukrainian card, for example ZEN.com to PrivatBank cards or Wise. Compare the final amount in hryvnia, not just the stated fee: part of the cost is hidden in the exchange rate.
How much money can be transferred from Ukraine abroad in 2026?
From August 11, 2026, payments abroad from hryvnia accounts, including transfers to your own foreign card, are limited to UAH 200,000 per month. Transfers abroad from foreign currency accounts for goods and services are limited to another UAH 200,000 per month. Check the exact terms with your bank.
Can you send money from Ukraine via Wise?
No. Residents of Ukraine can only receive transfers from abroad to Ukrainian cards via Wise, but cannot send them.
When will Ukraine join SEPA?
There is no exact date. The NBU plans to submit the application by the end of 2026; for this, the Verkhovna Rada must adopt draft law No. 14327-d. After the connection, euro transfers between Ukraine and the EU should become faster and cheaper.
Is it cost-effective to transfer money via cryptocurrency?
Sometimes yes, but banks consider P2P transactions risky, and transfer limits apply in Ukraine. For regular support for family, legal fintech channels are more reliable.
How can you find out the actual cost of a transfer?
